The Difference Matters More Now than Ever

Self-proclaimed "experts" pontificate on the distinctions between employers and independent contractors. Some have generated undue concern and have even spread misinformation. For example, at one recent presentation sponsored by a local human resource society, a speaker warned attendees that, to be treated as an independent contractor for tax purposes, a service provider must produce proof they do business as a corporation or limited liability company with a federal taxpayer identification number. This is simply not true.
