Iowans Feed 5+ Million Through Meals from the Heartland

September 18, 2012

In just two hours on Wednesday, August 29, Nyemaster Goode attorneys and staff packaged nearly 3,500 meals to help feed the world's hungry people through Meals from the Heartland. In addition, during the weeks leading up to the packaging event, firm personnel made cash contributions to the program that translated into approximately another 17,625 meals.

The meals, packaged six to a bag, contain rice, soy protein, dehydrated vegetables and a vitamin tab. The packages are boxed up and distributed around the world by local food pantries to Haiti, China, South Africa – wherever there are those who are in need of good, nutritious meals.

The inspiration for the Meals from the Heartland began with a 2007 food packaging event held by Kids Against Hunger in West Des Moines. Encouraged by the success of that event, local civic leaders came together to organize a community-wide food packaging event that would involve more volunteers to feed hungry children and families around the world. Since then, the event has called forth more and more volunteers to help with what is now a four-day mass packaging event. In the 2012 effort, over 15,000 volunteers participated in packaging more than 5 million meals in four days.

Nyemaster Goode has supported the event since its early beginnings by providing pro bono legal services, fund raisers and volunteers.
